Corey Brown catches 2 TD passes from QB Kalkstein who passed for 150 yards. Gateway led 21-9 at halftime. First time Gateway beat Penn Hills twice in one season.

WPIAL AAAA Championship Game. The Gators season came to an unexpected end as Gateway's offense could not get in sync the entire game, and BP limited the Gators to only 6 points, well under their 40 point average. The Gators D played outstanding in limiting BP to 10 points, but in the end too many turnovers and miscues doomed the Gators. The Gators were held to 55 yards rushing and 110 yards of total offense, while fumbling three times (starting with the opening kickoff), throwing two interceptions, and missing an extra point on their TD. Gateway is now 0-3 at Heinz field, and has lost three WPIAL Championships in a row since their 7-6 victory against North Hills in 1986.

 
 
536   9/4/2009 Penn Hills   19-7 W A Gateway dominated the game offensively, but had 6 turnovers - 4 inside the Penn Hills 20... and that kept Penn Hills in the game. Gators led at halftime 6-0. Gators missed all three extra point attempts. In the 2nd half, Gateway established the running game and Orne Bey led the Gators to victory with 136 yards rushing and 2 TD's. Going into the game, Penn Hills was ranked as high as #17 nationally, and #1 in the WPIAL. Penn Hills started a soph. QB. The game was selected as a "Rivalry Game" by the Air Force, and Orne Bey was named game MVP, and the Gators received a special "Rivalry" trophy courtesy of the Air Force after winning the game.
537   9/11/2009 Baldwin   43-7 W A Gators jump out to a 30-0 halftime lead. Brandon Felder and Dayonne Nunley each ran for two touchdowns to lead Gateway (2-0) to the blowout win at Baldwin (0-2). Felder scored on runs of 14 and 54 yards, while Nunley's came from 23 and 22 yards. Rob Kalkstein went 10 of 14 for 217 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Gators play game without three normal starters, and two additional starters are injured mid-game and do not return. Nice crisp evening, 68 degrees small breeze. First game for Gateway on Baldwin's new field turf. Good crowd size.
538   9/17/2009 Greater Latrobe   49-0 W H Orne Bey rushed for 121 yards and two touchdowns on only seven carries as Gateway routed Latrobe, 49-0, in the Foothills Conference opening game last night. Brendon Felder scored on a 60-yard punt return and a 36-yard run for the Gators (3-0, 1-0), who are ranked No. 2 in WPIAL Class AAAA. The game was televised live on FSN-Pittsburgh
539   9/25/2009 Penn-Trafford   51-14 W A The Gators cruised out to a 38-0 lead in the first half before the Warriors got any offense going. The Warriors were able to score with 17 seconds left in the 1st half, but after receiving the kickoff, the Gators went 60+ yards in two passing plays and scored again before halftime to make the score 45-7 at the half. In the 2nd half, most of the 1st team played only the first series, and then Gateway started subbing in players. The Warriors kept their starting offense in the ENTIRE game and were able to generate a second touchdown against the Gators with 1:11 on the clock to make the final 51-14.
540   10/2/2009 Norwin   55-7 W H Gateway unleashed its potent offense against visiting Norwin in the Foothills Conference. The Gators, who have scored 198 points in their last four games, saw four players score two touchdowns apiece. Orne Bey dashed to scoring runs of 55 and 49 yards in the first quarter, and Brendon Felder later added runs of 15 and 80 yards. Markie'd Jones scored both of Gateway's second-half touchdowns on runs of 4 and 15 yards. Rob Kalkstein connected with Steve Vranka on two touchdowns, one from 66 yards and the other from 5 yards. During the pregame warmup, the rain showers ended... and then right at the opening kickoff, heavy rains started, and it rained hard the entire 1st half. Rain stopped at halftime and 2nd half was rain free.
541   10/9/2009 Hempfield   55-0 W A Gateway broke the 50-point plateau for the third game in a row by routing host Hempfield in the Foothills Conference. Six players scored rushing touchdowns for the Gators, four coming in a 35-point first half. Brendon Felder used his four carries to burst for a game-high 101 yards and scored on a 65-yard run. The Gators have outscored their opponents, 272-35. Most of the game was played in a heavy rain. Hempfield has ASTROTURF field surface.
542   10/16/2009 Erie McDowell   35-17 W H One of the most memorable games of all time; McDowell controls the ball for 19:40 of 24 minutes in the first half, limiting Gateway to 9 plays on offense. Gateway trailed 10-7 at the half. Starting at 4:52 of the 3rd period, the Gators roll off 28 points to blow the game open and bottle up the McDowell offense, holding their rushing attack to under 30 yards in the 2nd half. QB Kalkstein throws for three TD's, 30, 45 and 23 yards and rushes for another to lead the Gators. Entire game played in a light mist/rain. Game of the week in AAAA, but no TV stations bother covering the game...

QB Kalkstein 4 for 4, 3 TD and 168 yds passing. Starters come out midway through 2nd qtr. Connellsville doesn't record their first tackle until 5:40 of 2nd - prior to that each time a Gator touched the ball it went for a TD. 55-0 at the half. Game played in an off and on light rain / mist. In the first quarter, the Gators held the ball for only 36 seconds total, but led 35-0. By halftime, the Gators had only 4:26 of possession time, but led 55-0. Stands almost empty - very few on hand to witness this historic game.
544   10/30/2009 McKeesport   35-14 W A In one of the most memorable Gateway victories of the Terry Smith era, Gateway dominated McKeesport. McKeesport had only 85 rushing yards on 29 attempts. Gateway's offense had 26 first downs to McKeesport's eight, and Gateway also had 230 yards rushing. Orne Bey rushed for 108 yards on 23 carries and Brendon Felder for 97 on 14. QB Kalkstein completed 16 of 26 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown. Overall Gateway outgained McKeesport 423 to 172. Game was played on a clear night with slight breeze, 65 degrees, and packed standing room only crowd at McKeesport.

Kalkstein, who surpassed the 6,000-yard career passing plateau, completed 8 of 10 attempts. Steve Vranka caught four passes, including two touchdowns, for 104 yards. Game was played on a crisp, clear evening, 35 degrees. Stadium was ~ 60% full.

Rob Kalkstein threw for 235 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the top-seeded Gators (11-0) to a convincing victory over the ninth-seeded Indians (5-6) in a quarterfinal game played at Norwin High School. The victory earns Gateway its third consecutive semifinal berth. Kalkstein, who completed 8 of 14 passes, connected with Brendon Felder on touchdown passes of 83 and 38 yards. He also threw a 54-yard scoring strike to Armstead Williams. Felder had three receptions for 121 yards. Felder also scored on a 2-yard run. The Gators also scored on a 17-yard run by Markie'd Jones. Penn Hills scored its only points on a 25-yard field goal by Eric Vincent in the second quarter. Game was played on a clear night, 55 degrees, and stadium was 2/3rds full.

Gators running back Brendon Felder scored three touchdowns and ran for 83 yards, and receiver Dayonne Nunley had a pair of scores and an interception to power Gateway offense and avoid the upset by Cinderella team North Hills. On the game's second play from scrimmage, Nunley took a screen pass 59 yards through the center of North Hills' defense for the game's first touchdown. Adding another highlight-reel play to his night, Nunley fielded a North Hills kick inside the 20 and burned down the right side of the field for an 82-yard kick return touchdown. QB Kalkstein was 10 of 14 passing for 149 yards and two touchdowns of 59 yards to Dayonne Nunley and 26 yards to Steve Vranka. The Gators now advance to Heinz Field for the 3rd consecutive year.

Gateway loses the AAAA title game for the third consecutive year, this time being shut out by Woodland Hills, 10-0. Very chilly evening around 30 degrees. Grass field surface was in excellent condition, the best field conditions we've seen at Heinz. Gateway is now 0-4 at Heinz this decade.

550   9/10/2010 Penn Hills   7-18 L H In one of the sloppiest games in memory, the Gators lost to arch-rival Penn Hills snapping a 5 game winning stream against their neighbor. The Gators had at least 14 penalties, 3 of which were personal fouls, threw four interceptions, and constantly were making mental mistakes. Weather was perfect 70 degrees and the stadium was full.
551   9/17/2010 Greater Latrobe   38-7 W A Gators roll to a 24-0 halftime lead, then surrender their first TD to Latrobe in three years late in the 3rd quarter. Great weather for football - 68 degrees at kickoff. Evening dew started making the grass field wet by 9pm making footing difficult in the 2nd half thus the reduced scoring.
552   9/24/2010 Penn-Trafford   35-10 W H First game against former Gateway coach John Ruane (new coach of P-T). PT comes out fired up and take a 10-7 halftime lead. 2nd half Gators dominate all phases of the game and roll off 4 TD's while holding PT star RB Manny Simpson to 22 yards in the 2nd half. This was one of the finest game time weather conditions we've ever seen. 84 degrees the whole evening with a 10 mph breeze.
553   10/1/2010 Norwin   48-7 W A Norwin recovered a pooch kick on the opening kickoff and moved 40 yards for a TD. From that point on the Gators piled up nearly 500 yards in offense and rolled off 48 points in a row to make the final score 48-7. Gators held Norwin QB Petro to 66 yards passing the week after he threw for nearly 300. Temp at kickoff was 62 degrees with a slight breeze. Packed homecoming crowd at Norwin stadium.
554   10/8/2010 Hempfield   33-0 W H Gators open the scoring on a Thomas Woodson to Armstead Williams 53-yard touchdown pass and never looked back in shutting out the visiting Spartans on a great evening at Antimarino Stadium.
555   10/14/2010 Pittsburgh Central Catholic   7-21 L A Game played at Carnegie Mellon University
#1 PCC showed its power and depth by dominating the Gators 21-7 Thursday night, marking the 8th straight loss to PCC dating back to 1996. Central's all-star roster, led by six seniors on the line, QB Ellis (197 yards passing) and three excellent running backs led by FB Luster (Penn Hills) had their way both offensively and defensively with the Gators. The Gators were held to -6 yards offense in the 1st half and 13 yards total rushing, before scoring with 18 seconds left in the game to avoid the shutout.
556   10/22/2010 Connellsville   49-7 W A The Gators rolled up a 35-0 halftime lead in route to a 49-7 pounding of Connellsville on a chilly 40 degree evening at the visitors stadium.
557   10/29/2010 McKeesport   14-28 L H McKeesport jumps out to a 28-0 lead halfway through the 3rd quarter before the Gators score twice in the 4th quarter to cut the lead to 14, but run out of time. McKeesport players show their class by performing a 'gators chomp' after the game. First time the Gators haven't won the section championship since 2006. First time the Gators have lost to port since 2006. Very cool evening 38 degrees.
558   11/5/2010 Erie McDowell   37-21 W H McDowell scored first, then the Gators rolled off 27 points in a row, then held on to defeat a tough Erie squad. Gators QB Woodson rushed for 219 yards and was 11/15 for 135 yards passing. Game was played on a 38 degree evening with a little drizzle in the 2nd quarter. This was McDowell's first WPIAL playoff game.

PCC takes a 10-0 half time lead. Midway through the 4th quarter, Darrell Turner picks off a PCC pass at the PCC 40. Gators drive to the 2 yard line and have 1st and goal from the 2. Gators are stopped on four consecutive running plays up the middle and turn the ball over to PCC at the half-yard line. Game played on a cool 38 degree evening with clear skies. Gateway has now lost 9 in a row to PCC dating back to 1996. PCC dresses approximately 100 players, Gateway dresses around 50.

 
 
560   9/4/2011 Bishop McDevitt (Harrisburg, PA)   28-7 W H A rare Sunday game 6pm kickoff for the Gators. Game was tied 7-7 at the half, before the Gators rolled of 21 points and won handily. The defense had a great game limiting a tough McDevitt squad to 40 yards rushing and 110 passing.
561   9/9/2011 Penn Hills   19-13 W A Gators scored first but XP blocked. PH scored on a broken play 50 yard pass & run, 7-6 PH. Gators scored again on a long pass play but missed the 2 point conversion, 12-7 Gators. PH scored just before the half and led 13-12. The Gators scored late in the 3rd to make it 19-13 and the Gators D held PH in check and force two 4th down turnovers on downs inside the Gateway 40 with under 10 minutes left. On the last drive the offense ground out several first downs to wind out the clock. Field was in bad condition, wet, muddy, weeds, and fog set in later in the game. PH stadium was mostly empty.
562   9/16/2011 Greater Latrobe   45-7 W H Gators QB Woodson completed his first 10 passes and finished the game 15 of 18 for 334 yards and four touchdowns, and he rushed for 55 yards and a score. His first two incomplete passes were drops.
563   9/23/2011 Penn-Trafford   14-16 L A Despite holding star PT RB Manny Simpson to his lowest output of the year (134 yards), and outgaining PT offensively, the Gators were unable to hold a 14-13 lead with 1:51 to play and lost on a 31 yard FG with 6 seconds left.
564   9/30/2011 Norwin   85-0 W H Gators scored 42 points in the 1st quarter, had a 62-0 halftime lead, and the JV's played the entire 2nd half and still scored another 23 points to make the final a record-breaking 85-0. Gators had 586 yards of offense to 28 for Norwin. Game played in a light rain most of the night.
565   10/7/2011 Hempfield   36-0 W A The Gators extended their all-time record against Hempfield to 12-2 by shutting out the host Spartans. Great weather ~70 at gametime clear skies. The Spartans have not scored on Gateway since 1989 and the Gators have now won 4 in a row back to that time. The Gators were a bit sluggish in the first half before scoring at will in the 2nd half and mercy-ruling the hosts.
566   10/14/2011 Pittsburgh Central Catholic   7-13 L H The Gators dropped their 10th straight game to PCC dating back to 1996. PCC scored twice in the first quarter but Gateway answered late in the 2nd quarter to go to the half at 13-7. In the 2nd half the Gators were plagued by several untimely penalties and one bad call (illegal forward pass) which killed Gateway drives. PCC outgained Gateway 320-120. PCC #71 ejected from the game in the 2nd quarter after kicking a Gator.

568   10/28/2011 McKeesport   38-0 W A In one of the most complete and dominating games of Coach Smith's career, the Gators mercy-ruled McKeesport (6-3) at the Tiger's own stadium. At halftime, the Gators led 10-0 and had 188 yards of offense to 14 yards for McKeesport (13 plays). In the 2nd half, the Gators kicked off to McKeesport and promptly forced them to punt after 3 plays and from there started a 28 point burst behind big plays by Darin Franklin. By 1:40 of the 3rd the Gators invoked the mercy rule on the Tigers and started subbing in the JV's who shut out the hosts the rest of the way. When the JV's started subbing at 1:40 - McKeesport had 26 yards of total offense! This was the first time the Gators shut McKeesport out since 1986, the second time ever that the Gators shutout McKeesport in 33 total games dating back to 1975 - and coming into this game McKeesport was averaging 40 points per game.
569   11/4/2011 Shaler   52-13 W H Gateway scored 20 1st quarter points on its way to a 52-13 win. RB Franklin capped off the opening drive with a 1yd run. Shaler went 3 and out and Cody Conway blocked J.P. Holtz’ kick and Graham Davis recovered the ball in the end zone to put Gateway up 14-0. Devantae Butler picked off a pass and Patrick Livsey would make that turnover hurt by scoring on a 2yd run. QB Woodson scored on a 26yd run in the 2nd quarter and Franklin and Livsey would add their 2nd TD runs of the first half for a 38-0 halftime lead. Brian Jones added a pair of second half TD runs. Shaler had 151 yards passing however most of those yards were after the Gators started subbing out the starters. Gateway’s scoreless streak was snapped at 165:24 minutes. Franklin finished with 107-yards rushing for Gateway, all in the first half, as the Gators rushed for 293-yards as a team.
570   11/11/2011 Penn-Trafford   34-9 W N Game played at Hempfield
Gateway did most of its damage on the ground paced by Andre Martin's 111 yards on 13 carries. Quarterback Thomas Woodson added 10 carries for 70 yards and Darin Franklin chipped in with 6 carries for 62 yards. Franklin started the Gateway scoring with a 30-yard touchdown run on a fourth down play with 1:12 to play in the first quarter. He added an 86-yard punt return in the second quarter to put Gateway up 14-0. Franklin did not play in the second half due to knee soreness. Gateway (9-2) assumed command in the second half with a 12-play, 65-yard drive that took 5:20 off the clock to start the third quarter. A 3-yard touchdown run by Patrick Livsey made the score 21-3 and Gateway never looked back. Penn Trafford (10-1) was led on the ground by Quarterback Zach Emerick's 95 yards on 12 carries. Manny Simpson added 71 yards on 23 carries. Gateway's defense pressured Emerick throughout the evening, holding the Penn Trafford quarterback to 38 yards passing.
571   11/18/2011 North Allegheny   17-21 L N Game played at Fox Chapel
Despite losing 14-0 at the half, the Gators pounded back and scored 17 unanswered points to take a 17-14 lead with around 8 minutes left in the game. N.A. took the ensuing kickoff and started driving downfield, and on a 3rd and 10 play from the Gators 40, the Gators intercepted the N.A. pass but were flagged for a phantom pass-interference call, giving the Tigers a first down on the Gators 20. They proceeded to wind down the clock and score with 43 seconds remaining to win the game. On the 2nd play of the game Gators QB Woodson suffered a shoulder injury and was unable to throw the ball the rest of the game. He sat out until halftime and played the 2nd half. Also RB Franklin reinjured his right knee during a big run in the 3rd quarter and was lost for the rest of the game. The depth of N.A. certainly helped a bit in this game - they dressed around 100 players to the Gators 40. It was a tough way to end the season for the Gators.

574   9/14/2012 Kiski Area   55-14 W A Gators held a 34-14 halftime lead - dispite only allowing 44 yards in offense to Kiski in the first half - due to 87 yards in penalties helping Kiski move the ball. The Gators rolled off 21 unanswered points in the 2nd half. Big rushing games from Andre Martin and Tom Woodson.
