Gators 53 - Kiski 0

Cameron Saddler did not tie the national record for kickoff returns for touchdown in a season (six, by three players). But he had a big night nonetheless, scoring five consecutive times to lead the visiting Gators in a Big East showdown to settle the Nos. 3 and 4 seeds.

Saddler scored on runs of 37, 1, 8 and 2 yards and on a 50-yard interception return. He gained 164 yards on 21 carries, one of three Gators (5-4, 3-2) to top 100. Brian Williams had 123 yards on seven attempts and Eric Livsey 150 on eight. Williams scored twice, Livsey once.

Gateway gained 460 of its 467 yards on the ground and limited Kiski (4-5, 2-3) to 51 yards on offense. 20 of Kiski's 51 yards came on their last drive against the Gators' subs.

Gators pile up nearly 700 all purpose yards enroute to a 59-24 win

The Gators got back on the winning track Friday by trapping the Foxes 59-24. The Gators had 6 scoring plays of longer than 50 yards - 3 KO's returned for TD's (2 by Cameron S.), 2 long bomb passes, and one 70+ yard TD run. With the win, the Gators locked up a playoff slot. Next week, the Gators will travel north to take on Kiski in a game that will settle the final playoff order. As of right now, a predicted Gators opponent in the 1st round of the playoffs would be the North conference champion - either North Allegheny or North Hills.

Gators swamped 41-7 by Penn Hills

The Gators were blasted 41-7 at Penn Hills on Friday. The Gators had turnover trouble again with 4 turnovers, and spotted PH a 20-0 lead before scoring their only TD just before the end of the 1st half. On the ensuing possession, PH scored on a 60 yard broken play (lateral pass, fumble and 60 yard run) and that took the wind out of the Gators with a 28-7 halftime score. In the 2nd half, the Gators were unable to get any offense going, even against the 2nd string PH defense and PH wound out the clock.

Since 1989, Penn Hills has gone 14-2-1 against the Gators to take a 24-15-1 lead in the series. This was the worst defeat in the series since the Indians won, 48-0, in 1994, and the worst defeat for Coach Terry Smith since he became head coach in 2002.

The Gators now are forced to win one of the remaining two conference games against Fox Chapel and Kiski to qualify for the playoffs. One certainty is that if they make the playoffs they will not have a home playoff game because at best they will finish with a 5-4 record, which will be in the bottom 8 teams of the 16 team playoff field.

Gators shut out by Woodland Hills

The Gators were shut out tonight at home by the Woodland Hills Wolverines. The Gators were unable to overcome 5 turnovers - 3 INT's and 2 fumbles - leading to a total of over 30 turnovers in the 6 games so far this year.

The Gators made two trips inside the WH 5, one in the first half - ended on a bad snap during a field goal attempt and the kick was blocked, and in the 4th quarter with the Gators trailing 14-0, Dorian Bell fumbled while trying to score after the Gators got a 1st and Goal at the WH 4. The lone highlight for the Gators was 133 yards rushing by Cameron Saddler. Despite having more offensive yardage and time of possession at halftime, the Gators could not finish the execution and dropped the section match to the Wolverines.

The Gators suffered their first shutout since a 31-0 loss at Latrobe on 9/21/2001, over 5 years ago. It was also the Gators first homecoming shutout in more than 12 years...

Up next: @ Penn Hills next Friday.

Gators 21, Mustangs 19

In a hard fought game, the Gators overcame a tough challenge and prevailed 21-19. The Gators had to overcome 4 fumbles and 2 INT's and then game came down to a 39 yard field goal attempt by Plum with 40 seconds on the clock. The kick was short and a bit to the right and the Gators were able to run out the clock. Dorian Bell rushed for 138 yards and 2 TD's. The Gator "D" held Plum to 6 yards rushing on 29 attempts, but were torched through the air for 300 yards passing.

Gators 37, Norwin 14

The Gators racked up 399 yards in a defeat at drizzly Antimarino stadium on Friday night. For the first time this season, Cameron Saddler did not return a kickoff for a touchdown. But he did open the scoring with an 83-yard reception from Rob Kalkstein and later scored on a 68-yard punt return to lead the Gators past the visiting Knights. Gators QB Kalkstein, a freshman, completed 10 of 19 for 160 yards and one score for the Gators (2-2). Jon Ditto added 102 yards on six carries, including touchdowns of 60 yards and 1 yard.

Gators 40 - Baldwin 3

The Gators stormed to a 34-3 halftime lead and wore down the host Baldwin Highlanders on Friday night. Eric Livsey, Cameron Saddler and Jon Ditto scored two touchdowns each, as the Gators made the most of their trip to the South Hills. Livsey carried 14 times for 149 yards and 1- and 2-yard scores. Saddler ran 2 yards and returned a kickoff 78 yards for touchdowns, and Ditto scored on 33- and 12-yard passes from Rob Kalkstein. The Gators (1-2) were tough on one of their former players, Baldwin coach Mike Silianoff. Gateway outgained the Highlanders, 304-155.

Gators travel to Baldwin on Friday

The Gators (0-2) will head to the south hills on Friday to take on the Baldwin Highlanders (0-2) in a battle of winless teams. Baldwin's two losses came against Shaler (0-10) and Woodland Hills (14-49).

This will be the first time Gateway has faced Baldwin since the 2002 playoffs (Coach Smith's first season), where the Gators pulled the upset of the playoffs and topped a highly regarded Baldwin squad 28-20. The 2002 Gators also opened the season 0-2 losing to Penn Hills and Woodland Hills before getting hot and making it all the way to the WPIAL AAAA Semis. The last time the Gators played at Baldwin was in 1999, when they won 34-14.

Gateway and Baldwin have only played twice in team history (back to 1982 at least...); 1999 (Gators 34-14) and 2002 playoffs (Gators 28-20).

Gators drop wild game to McKeesport

The Gators, who have had one of the toughest opening AAAA schedules, dropped to 0-2 with a loss to McKeesport on Friday night. For more information, please read the newspaper articles linked in the left navigation.

The Tigers gained all 354 of their yards on the ground. Keys scored on runs of 64, 2 and 4 yards, and Marvase Whindleton carried nine times for 130, including a 47-yard score. Central tops the Gators 42-27

Pittsburgh Central Catholic topped the Gators 42-20 in the 3rd Kickoff Classic at Antimarino Stadium. Star Central RB Lamont Smith was held to 120 yards as the Gators had numerous turnovers (1 INT, 4 FUMB, 1 Punt Block) that they were unable to overcome. The Gators pulled the game to within 21-20 in the 3rd quarter after a Dorian Bell TD run, but the extra point was missed and central in turn converted several more Gators turnovers into a 42-20 lead before the Gators scored on their final possession. All told, the Gators OUTGAINED Central 276-265. A couple of positive notes for the Gators: Freshman QB Kalkstein was 8-10 for 120 yards passing (227.6 rating), 2 TD's and 1 INT. RB/CB Cameron Saddler performed well at RB and kick returning, Returning one KO 86 yards to the house. OL Doyle had several "pancakes" of All-Star OL Wisniewski, and the OL and DL performed well. Additionally, the Gators "D" also played well in limiting QB Sunseri to 3 or 9 passing and limiting the damage from RB Smith. Up next for the Gators, defending PIAA champs McKeesport will visit on Friday.

Gators/Bethel Park Scrimmage Update

The Gators spent plenty of time during their second and final scrimmage working on the running game. With the #1 and #2 tailbacks stil out due to injury, the running game had some problems getting going. Bethel Park, who looked very solid in the offensive and defensive lines won the varsity scrimmage 2-1. The scrimmage lasted just under an hour, one of the shortest varsity scrimmages we can recall. The Gators got their only score on the last drive of the "Down and Distance" segment by going to the air with QB Kalkstein hitting several key passes to his receivers, including WR Jon Ditto.

Up next for the Gators: #8 in the country Pittsburgh Central Catholic this Saturday.
