Just received word today from Derek Aker, our #1 fan, that "I will be back in 2011! - The Rock will be back!".
Even though the Gators 'D' played a tough game, limiting the all-star PCC offense to only 10 points, the offense remained powerless against PCC - scoring only 7 points in 8 quarters this season, and the Gators were shutout 10-0. The main turning point in the game was at the 5 minute mark of the 4th quarter when Gateway had the ball first and goal from the 2 1/2 yard line but could not get a TD on 4 tries in a row. After that PCC ran the clock down and that was the game.

Gators QB Thomas Woodson put on a one-man-show Friday night a cold Antimarino Stadium, by not only picking apart the Trojans secondary with precise passing (11 of 15 for 135), but also scrambing for 219 rushing yards, which may be a Gateway QB record.

As predicted, the #8 Gators will host the #9 Erie McDowell Trojans this Friday @ Antimarino Stadium. This will be McDowell's first WPIAL playoff game. The Gators are 2-0 all-time against the Trojans, and are 5-4 on the season. Should the Gators win, they will face the PCC/Pine Richland winner at a neutral field.

The Tigers leapt out to a 28-0 lead by midway in the 3rd quarter and withstood a late rally by the Gators to win the Quad Southwest Championship for the first time since 2007. The Gators fall to 5-4 and will await their playoff matchup to be announced on Monday. For more information about the game, please see the news articles.
Our prediction on the first round matchup is Erie McDowell (7-2, probably ranked #9) visiting our Gators here this coming Friday. Should the Gators prevail, they would likely face PCC or Lebo.

Gateway High School football player was killed and a teammate was wounded in a double shooting late Thursday at a shopping center in Durham, N.C. Friends of Gateway senior Darrell Turner already have put up a Facebook page mourning his death. Mr. Turner and his teammate, junior Thomas Woodson, were shot in the parking lot outside an AT&T store near the Comfort Inn and Suites hotel, where their team was staying on the way to a camp in Florida, Durham police said.
Mr. Turner was pronounced dead at Duke University Hospital a short time later, according to news reports from Durham. Mr. Woodson suffered a non-life-threatening injury to the leg.
Investigators learned that the shooting suspect was staying at the nearby SpringHill Marriot hotel, police said. Officers arrested him there around 2:10 a.m. today. The suspect had been eating at an Outback Steakhouse across the road a few minutes before the shooting and didn't know the victims, police told Durham news outlets. Investigators aren't sure what prompted the shooting.
Mr. Turner would have been a senior this coming school year. Gators coach Terry Smith listed him as a Division I prospect on his preseason questionnaire for the 2010 season. He played linebacker and was a part-time starter in 2009 on a team that went 12-1 and lost to Woodland Hills, 10-0, in the WPIAL Class AAAA championship game. Turner was a full-time starter last year as a junior.
Thomas Woodson, a to-be Junior is the team's starting QB, and started all 11 games in 2010 as a Sophomore.

#1 PCC showed its power and depth by dominating the Gators 21-7 Thursday night, marking the 8th straight loss to PCC dating back to 1996. Central's all-star roster, led by six seniors on the line, QB Ellis (197 yards passing) and three excellent running backs led by FB Luster (Penn Hills) had their way both offensively and defensively with the Gators. The Gators were held to -6 yards offense in the 1st half and 13 yards total rushing, before scoring with 18 seconds left in the game to avoid the shutout.
The Gators will look to rebound next Friday against winless Connellsville.

The Gators spoiled the host Norwin Knights homecoming in dramatic fashion Friday night by rolling of 48 consecutive points on way to a 48-7 drubbing of the Knights. The game didn't start exactly according to plan when the Knights recovered a pooch kickoff and then proceeded to move the ball 40 yards and get their only score of the night 1:30 into the game. After that, it was all Gateway. The Gators held Norwin to 160 yards offense - holding Norwin QB Petro to a measly 66 yards passing a week after he threw for nearly 300 in a game. At the same time the defense was holding the Knights in check, the Gators offense piled up nearly 500 yards by scoring every time they had the ball - 48 points in a row, to send Norwin's packed stadium home early from their Homecoming celebration. Up next for the Gators, they will host Hempfield (0-5) on Friday the 8th for the Gators Homecoming night.

Pitts.
Congratulations to Coach Smith for the outstanding job that he does with the kids and in the community.
The Gators (2-2) took a lot of blows from Penn-Trafford in a hard fought first half which ended with the visiting Warriors leading 10-7. However, in the 2nd half, the Gators defense completely shut down the P-T offense, while at the same time the Gators offense scored 4 touchdowns to make the final a 35-10 victory. The Gators now hit the road and will take on Norwin next Friday.

The Gators lost to their arch-rival Penn Hills Friday night in a very sloppy game by both teams. The Gators had at least 14 penalties including 3 personal fouls - and many at inopportune times including once late in the game where the Gators got to the PH 1 only to have a penalty bring the ball back to the 23. Add to that four interceptions and a few nice runs by Penn Hills and now the Gators have started the season 0-2 for the first time since 2006, and had their 5 game winning streak against PH snapped.
The Gators will look to regroup this week and will travel to Latrobe to face the 2-0 Wildcats who defeated Canon-Mac 27-0 this past week.

Even though the Gators held the top running back in PA to only 73 yards rushing, they could not generate offense - only 93 yards total, and were shut out by the #1 AAA team in the state, Bishop McDevitt.
Noteable quotes from the game:
"That was the best defense I ever faced. Those boys are good" - Jameel Poteat, Bishop McDevitt star running back commenting on the Gateway defense that held him to a 3 yard per carry average.
"People better not sleep on Gateway. We caught them at the right time. They're going to be good. Their defense will win games until their offense is ready." -Bishop McDevitt coach Jeff Weachter

The Gators, despite missing at least 5 starters both ways, took on Bethel Park in a hard fought scrimmage in the south hills. The final score was 17-14 with BP winning on a 50 yard bomb on the last play of the scrimmage to pull out the win. It was a good test for the younger Gators to step in and play at the Varsity level against a quality opponent.
Up next, the Gators will head to Harrisburg to take on Bishop McDevitt this Saturday at noon.
Note: Due to technical issues, photos will not be up until Wednesday night or Thursday AM.
In a hard fought scrimmage where both offenses tried hard to shake off the off-season rust, the Gators prevailed by scoring twice on 70-yard TD runs. Up next this Friday Gateway will travel to Bethel Park to face the Blackhawks. The two touchdowns were scored by Brian "Juice" Jones and Darin Franklin.

From the Tribune-Review:
The Penn-Trafford school board unanimously approved the hiring of John Ruane to the post Monday. Ruane comes to Penn-Trafford from Gateway, where he served as offensive coordinator.
Ruane replaces T.J. Wiley, who resigned after one season, citing personal reasons. Penn-Trafford finished 3-7 last season, with a 49-21 loss to Bethel Park in the first round of the WPIAL Class AAAA playoffs
"(We're looking at) rebuilding the program again," said Dr. Deborah Kolonay, Penn-Trafford superintendent. "I know after one year T.J. tried to begin that, but it takes a while. (We're looking at) getting the program back into a solid program and building it up."
Kolonay and board president Bruce Newell said Ruane, who resides in the Penn-Trafford School District, was strongly considered when Wiley was hired in 2009.
"I think he's the right man for the job there," Gateway coach Terry Smith said. "He lives in their community.I think he can help get Penn-Trafford back on track to where they once were. He's going to bring some creative ideas and implement some discipline and structure into the program and try to teach them to be a winner at that level."
Congratulations to Coach John and best wishes for a solid turnaround at Penn-Trafford
