Brown and Bell to play in Hawaii All-Star Game

Dorian Bell and Corey Brown have been selected to play an additional national all star game. They will be playing in the Hawaii versus United States Mainland All Star Game this Friday at Pro Bowl Stadium in Hawaii.

In addition to Corey and Dorian coach Terry Smith has been selected as an assistant coach for the game as well. This is a great honor and accomplishment.

Update: Corey Brown led the way for the US All Stars over the Hawaii All Stars. He Had 3 interceptions 2 pass break ups and 3 tackles. Dorian Bell had 5 Tackles and 1 Interception. Both represented Gateway very well.

Gators upset by Bethel Park, 10-6

The Gators season came to an unexpected end as Gateway's offense could not get in sync the entire game, and BP limited the Gators to only 6 points, well under their 40 point average. The Gators D played outstanding in limiting BP to 10 points, but in the end too many turnovers and miscues doomed the Gators. The Gators were held to 55 yards rushing and 110 yards of total offense, while fumbling three times (starting with the opening kickoff), throwing two interceptions, and missing an extra point on their TD.

Thanks again for your support this year... Shane & Marianne

Gators defeat rival Penn Hills and advance to Heinz!

The Gators (12-0) took the lead 2 minutes into the game and never allowed Penn Hills to pull even... In the other semi-final, #2 Bethel Park (12-0) knocked off McKeesport on a 72 yard screen pass TD with only 95 seconds left in the game and will meet Gateway Saturday November 22 at 7:30pm. This will be Bethel Park's first visit to the Championship game since 1980. Gateway has been to the WPIAL AAAA Championship game in 2004, 2007 and 2008 and are looking for their first Championship since 1986.

AAAA Championship trivia: The last time two undefeated teams played in the AAAA Championship was 1993, when Upper St. Clair and North Hills, both 12-0, played at Three Rivers Stadium.

Semi-Finals: Penn Hills Indians vs Gateway Gators
@ West Mifflin Stadium

Penn Hills (8-3) will take on our Gators (11-0) at West Mifflin Stadium TONIGHT at 7:30pm. This will be the first time Gateway has played at West Mifflin Stadium. This is also the second time in team history that Gateway & Penn Hills have played twice in a season - the other was 2006.

This past Friday, Penn Hills defeated North Hills 27-0. During the game, North Hills lost two key starters - their #3 tackler on defense early in the game and their quarterback to a broken leg early in the 2nd quarter. As a result, North Hills was limited to around 100 yards total offense.

The Penn Hills offense was limited by North Hills to 1 TD and 2 FG's, while their defense scored a long fumble return for a TD, and the special teams caused a NH fumble which was also returned a short distance for a TD. North Hills also intercepted the Penn Hills quarterback twice.   »2008-11-08 Gateway Sports Hall Of Fame photos

"A lot of things changed since the first time we played them. We're going to come out Friday and be a different team. It was a whooping we took, but we're not thinking about that right now."

"The first game we came out a little sluggish in the first two quarters. We have to come out to play four quarters. It's gonna be a good game. We're two evenly matched teams."

Gators to face Mt. Lebo in 1st round this Friday

The Gators have been slotted as the #1 seed in the 2008 WPIAL AAAA Playoffs. Up first, Mt. Lebanon, whom the Gators haven't played since 1999. Mt. Lebanon is 2-7 overall, with its two wins against Peters Township (1-8) and Baldwin (0-9). The Gators and Blue Devils were frequent WPIAL playoff competitors in the 70's and 1980's, with Gateway holding a 3-2 playoff record against Lebo - who was coached by current NA Coach Art Walker's father - Art Walker Sr. - during those years.

Gators prevail 31-27 over McKeesport

The Gators and Tigers slugged it out on Thursday night in front of an overflow capacity crowd at Antimarino Stadium. The Gators dashed out to a 28-0 lead before McKeesport, working with a short field due to a long kickoff return, scored but missed the extra point to make it 28-6. The Gators then proceeded to march right down the field to the McKeesport 2, where they tried 3 passes and then a field goal, which was missed. Halftime score 28-6, yardage 230 Gators, 100 McKeesport. After halftime, the Gators had problems scoring and managed only 3 points to McKeesport's 21, and in the end Chris Lammie sacked the McKeesport QB on 4th & 13 to preserve the victory for the Gators.

Up next: WPIAL Pairings meeting Monday night. Watch FSN Pittsburgh live at 7:30pm Monday night for the pairings. Tentaively we believe that Gateway will be the #1 seed and most likely face #16 Mt. Lebanon - whom they haven't played since 1999.

The Big Game - Mckeesport @ Gateway

In the biggest game of the year in AAAA football, McKeesport will play Gateway at "The Swamp" tonight at 7:00pm. The game is expected to be a sell-out. NOTE: as of 10/20/2008, all remaining reserved and GA tickets will be sold ONLY at the gate the night of the game

Quotes from McKeesport after their game 10-17 against Hempfield:
"I will tell you, I have been thinking about Gateway since after the Colerain game," McKeesport linebacker C. Brown said. "It has been that long."

Gateway will host McKeesport Thursday night on FSN with the Foothills Conference championship in the balance.

"They're the Gators, that's all I have to say about that," running back Gabe Patterson said. "We have been waiting a long time for this. We have never talked about them during the year. We only talk about the next opponent. That was all we were worried about."

"Yeah, we are finally there," McKeesport coach George Smith said. "We are finally going to play the game. We really haven't talked about them at all. We would run across some of their tape scouting other teams, but we really haven't been thinking about them."

Up next: Gators travel to Erie for 1st ever meeting with Erie McDowell

The Gators will make the long trip north on Friday 10/10 to face Erie McDowell for the first time in team history. This should be the toughest test yet this season for the Gators as they take on a team who has a strong rushing attack. Erie is 4-2 with their two losses to Seneca Valley (38-33) and McKeesport (19-13).

Erie McDowell beat visiting Latrobe Friday night. Erie's Alex Schmude and A.J. Fenton led host McDowell (4-2, 3-1) with 291 and 283 yards rushing, respectively, as the Trojans netted 633 yards on the ground. Leading, 21-13, at halftime, Erie's Schmude put the game away with third-quarter touchdown runs of 53, 27 and 72 yards for a final score of Erie McDowell 55, Latrobe 20.

Fenton said the Latrobe defense was a poor match for the Trojans' triple-option attack, as the Wildcats had one defensive end trying to key on two backs.

Fenton said he's looking forward to next week's matchup (with Gateway). "It's a great opportunity -- we have the No. 3 team in the country coming into our place," he said. "It's another chance for us to get better."

Update: Thursday's results - Gateway 3-0, wins over Mater Dei, Henry County GA and Byrnes, SC.

Thursday, Game by Game recap (From Nike Site):

Zoom Division Game 1
Team Super Bad (Monroeville, Pa.) 12, Team Field Generals (Santa Ana,Calif.) 7
Team Super Bad pulled out the last minute victory behind their super bad man, receiver/defensive back Corey Brown. With his team trailing 7-6 on its last drive, Brown came up with a big-time catch on a big-time collision with a Field General defender right at the 20-yard line. Even more important than the catch, the first down in the red zone meant Super Bad was allowed to finish its last drive with the clock stopped. On queue, two plays later, Brown caught the game winner from QB Rob Kalkstein.
Kalkstein had a productive game with 333 yards on 24 of 29 passing in his match up with Field General's Matt Barkley. After a slow start, the highly-regarded signal caller headed to USC completed 17 of 33 passes for 252 yards and one pretty 60-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Victor Blackwell. One of the passes Barkley did not complete was a big drop at the Field Generals' goal line. That would have given them a possible 14-6 lead with seven minutes to go. Instead it allowed Super Bad to pull out the victory behind Brown's heroics.

Zoom Division Game 2
Team Super Bad (Monroeville, Pa.) 30, Team Merciless (Atlanta, Ga.), 0
Super Bad continued its super performance at the Nike 7ON with a resounding victory over a weary Merciless team. Super Bad QB Rob Kalkstein, only a junior, continues to impress as he completed 17 of 31 passes for 434 yards and two scores. He spread the ball around to seven different receivers, none more impressive than senior Josh Vermeluen. He caught four passes for 196 yards, including a 80-yard touchdown strike to give Super Bad a 24-0 lead on the first offensive play of the second half for the victors.
Team Merciless played fatigued and could never get its vertical passing going, as QB Drew Little completed only eight of 23 passes for 85 yards. His longest completion went for 15 yards to Jamal Patterson, who caught a team-high three passes for 37 yards. The team from the Peach State's main problem seemed to be energy, which is easily sapped by a quarterback like Kalkstein.

Game 6 Red Field
Team Super Bad 27, Team Zoom Blade 21 (OT)
For almost all of this game, it looked like the team from Monroeville, Pa., was going to lose its first game of the day after two wins. But Super Bad’s defense came up with the stops, then the offense came alive in a come-from-behind win.
The Keystone State powerhouse thus capped a 3-0 day, joining Team Super Speed from Tampa, Fla., as the only two teams to accomplish that feat.
Brian Williams scored the game-winning touchdown for Super Bad on a two-yard pass from junior Rob Kalkstein. It was set up by a pass interference penalty on Zoom Blade that put the ball at the two.
Zoom Blade’s overtime series consisted of a seven-yard pass, incompletion, seven-yard pass, then an incompletion on fourth down.
Trailing 21-0 with approximately 10 minutes left in the game, Super Bad started its rally on a 12-yard TD pass from Kalkstein to senior standout Corey Brown. An interception by Karoush Hedjazi set up the next series, which was a one-play 60-yard bomb from Kalkstein to Josh Vermeluen.
The comeback continued for Super Bad when Andrew Blackmon came up with another interception. This gave the Pennsylvania squad the chance to tie it up at the end, which it did when Mile Wilson outleaped a defender in the end zone to haul in a 10-yard TD pass, which was followed by a two-point conversions reception by Brown.
Kalkstein was just 9 of 21 for 121 yards before the comeback, but ended up 17 of 33 for 291 yards.
For Zoom Blade, it was a reversal of its first two games when it rallied late (only to fall short). The team from South Carolina was sharp in the early going of this one as Chas Dodd threw first-half TD passes to Marcus Lattimore (two yards) and to Ricco Sanders (20 yards). Dodd then added his third TD in the second on a pass of eight yards to Lattimore. Dodd finished 26 of 45 for 325 yards with two interceptions. The leading receiver in the game was Lattimore, regarded as one of the top junior running backs in the nation. He had 10 receptions for 128 yards.

Former Gators star Justin King performs strong at NFL Combine

King, who graduated from PSU in only 3 years, was part of the biggest pool of talent at the combine - the defensive backs.

In the 40-yard dash, Justin ran a 4.31 which tied another DB for tops among DB's, and second fastest overall. Justin also had a 10 foot 7 inch broad jump which was good enough for 7th best among DB's. Now its a waiting game until the NFL draft...!

Lots of news updates...

More news than we can keep up with for a normally slow offseason!

1) Gateway Offensive Coordinator Harvey Smith takes the Head Coaching job at Kiski (Read)

2) Gateway moved to the new FOOTHILLS conference. This is a throwback to the 1980s and will see Gateway take on teams it used to regularly play... a nice change of pace. Erie McDowell to play against Foothills teams for the next two years. New conference: Connellsville, Gateway, Hempfield, Latrobe, McKeesport, Norwin, Penn-Traford

3) 2008 Schedule set - except for Game 1:
Week 1 - TBD
Week 2 - non conf. Baldwin @ Gateway
Week 3 - @ Latrobe
Week 4 - Penn Trafford
Week 5 - @ Norwin
Week 6 - Hempfield
Week 7 - @ Erie McDowell (in Erie, PA)
Week 8 - @ Connellsville
Week 9 - McKeesport

4) Rumors about Week 1: Gateway and Central Catholic are finalizing plans to play in a six-team classic in Wheeling, W.Va., over Labor Day weekend. It is likely that Gateway or Central Catholic will be matched up against Florida power Lakeland, which was ranked No. 1 in 2005 and 2006 by USA TODAY.
