Destiny Brown, 5-10, Guard, Monroeville, Pa. (Gateway HS) --- Brown is ranked No. 34 nationally by Blue Star Basketball and is a sixth-team Sporting News High School All-American. She averaged 13.6 points, 8.2 rebounds and 4.6 assists while leading Gateway (Pa.) High School. She played AAU basketball for the Philly Belles. "Destiny is a skilled shooting guard who has an excellent mid-range game and a high basketball IQ," said Mulkey. "She has good size and length for her position. Destiny will be able to stretch the defense and play multiple positions."
Congrats to Destiny and her family!
In ten seasons as a head coach at Gateway, Terry Smith has never missed the WPIAL Playoffs. In the previous nine years, the Gators have won every first round match up. That streak would continue tonight at Antamarino Stadium as Gateway scored 20 1st quarter points on its way to the 52-13 win over the 12th seeded Titans. Darin Franklin capped off the opening drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. Shaler was forced to punt on its initial possession, and Cody Conway blocked J.P. Holtz’ kick and Graham Davis recovered the ball in the end zone to put Gateway up 14-0. Devantae Butler would intercept Ryan Mincher on the next possession and Patrick Livsey would make that turnover hurt by scoring on a 2-yard run. With (4:29) remaining in the opening quarter, the Gators had jumped out to a 20-0 lead and this game was pretty much over. Thomas Woodson scored on a 26-yard run in the 2nd quarter and Franklin and Livsey would add their 2nd TD runs of the first half, and Gateway led 38-0 at halftime.
Brian Jones added a pair of second half TD runs to round out the scoring for the Gators. Mincher, who finished with 151-yards passing for the Titans, would throw scoring strikes to Sean Gavin from 24-yards and to Alex Conway from 9-yards - picking up most of his passing yardage after Gateway had already started substituting. The Gavin TD catch snapped Gateway’s scoreless streak at 165:24 minutes. Franklin finished with 107-yards rushing for Gateway, all in the first half, as the Gators rushed for 293-yards as a team.
Shaler’s season ends at (5-5). Gateway (8-2), the 5th seed in the AAAA tournament, advances to the quarterfinals for a rematch with Penn-Trafford. The Warriors defeated Gateway 16-14 in week 4 on a 31-yard field goal with (:01) remaining. (Thanks MSA Sports)

The Gators (7-2) will host Shaler (5-4) this Friday @ home. The Gators received the #5 seed while Shaler is #12. The Gators last played Shaler in 2008 at Norwin stadium in the 2nd round - winning 24-0. The Gators are 19-5 all-time against Shaler. One big note is that should Gateway prevail against Shaler - they will likely get a rematch with Penn-Trafford in the 2nd round...

In one of the most complete and dominating games of Coach Smith's career, the Gators mercy-ruled McKeesport (6-3) at the Tiger's own stadium. At halftime, the Gators led 10-0 and had 188 yards of offense to 14 yards for McKeesport (13 plays).
In the 2nd half, the Gators kicked off to McKeesport and promptly forced them to punt after 3 plays and from there started a 28 point burst behind big plays by Darin Franklin. By 1:40 of the 3rd the Gators invoked the mercy rule on the Tigers and started subbing in the JV's who shut out the hosts the rest of the way. When the JV's started subbing at 1:40 - McKeesport had 26 yards of total offense!
This was the first time the Gators shut McKeesport out since 1986, the second time ever that the Gators shutout McKeesport in 33 total games dating back to 1975 - and coming into this game McKeesport was averaging 40 points per game.
McKeesport coach Jim Ward said "I don't think we expected this and how we responded to some of that adversity and not moving the ball early and some turnovers ... all those things shocked our guys, and we're sitting in a locker room where they thoroughly beat us."
For more on this game check out the news articles. The Gators will find out Monday their path to Heinz field (the WPIAL playoff brackets). We'll have that info by around 9pm Monday night.

The Gators got a stout defensive effort in their season opener against the defending PIAA AAA runners-up. Gateway (1-0) limited Bishop McDevitt (0-1) to just 167 yards of offense, including a paltry 39 on the ground, and forced three second half turnovers to pull away for a 28-7 victory from a soaking wet Antimarino Stadium in Monroeville.

Dear Gateway community,
Since 2003, we have covered every single Gateway Gators football game, both home and away, scrimmages, and playoff games – 96 games in all. We’ve built the most popular high school football “team” site in Pennsylvania with over 500 visitors and gigabytes of images and video distributed each day. We’ve taken over 40,000 photos – all for free online on this site, hundreds of hours of video, and created over 500 video clips. Because we live in eastern Westmoreland County, it is - at minimum - an 80 mile round trip for us to each game, so to date we’ve driven well over 10,000 miles to attend all the games home and away.
During a typical season, we invest nearly $10,000 of our time, both personal and business, to operate this site, produce the videos and photo gallery, locate and publish content to the site, and our average income on the site has been around $200 a year. On a weekly basis, this represents over 20 hours a week of time we would otherwise be working on “paying” jobs or spending with our family and children.
It’s now time to ask you, the students and the community to be more involved in the site. We can no longer afford to devote this level of our time to maintaining the site without some sort of help from you.
Ideally we’d like volunteers to help take some of the roles needed to operate the site, but in the nearly two months we’ve had the “call for volunteers” posted on the homepage, we haven’t received a single inquiry.
We don’t know what our plans are for the 2011 season as of yet, but we’ll know a lot more based on the level of community or student interest we receive to help us take over parts of operating this great site.
Thanks in advance,
Shane
We are seeking the following volunteer assistance for the 2011 football season:
Sideline Photographer. This person will be responsible for taking all the photos pregame, during the game, and postgame for use on the GatewayGators.com web site. Approximately 350-500 photos per game. Must have a professional Digital SLR camera and (preferably) L quality lenses for shooting high speed action in low light conditions. Must be available to attend both scrimmages and ALL varsity games, home and away for the duration of the season and playoffs. Additionally looking for JV and 9th grade photographers, can be the same person or different persons. Also the ability to use FTP to upload the JPEG photos to us for processing into the online photo gallery within 12 hours of the game. (Note: more information and exact requirements are available by contacting us)
Sideline videographer. This person will be responsible for taking all video pregame, during the game, and postgame for use on the GatewayGators.com web site. Previous experience filming football games (at some level) is preferred. Must supply your own HD camcorder (we use a Canon HF10) and be able to supply raw video to us so that we can make it into a weekly highlight video. Must be able to bring us the camera so that we can export the raw video within 12 hours of the game.
Web site content writer/blogger. Great opportunity for a student, alumni or other Gateway fan to use the resources of this web site and the internet to write content for our site and use this as part of your portfolio (if you need it). This will include writing periodic off-season stories, and more importantly writing the pregame warmups and postgame game stories. Also will be a "staff writer" for a blog that we will be implementing in 2011. Should have good writing ability and be able to send examples of written work.
If one of these opportunities interests you or you would like more information about the positions, please Contact Us and let us know.

Gateway High School football player was killed and a teammate was wounded in a double shooting late Thursday at a shopping center in Durham, N.C. Friends of Gateway senior Darrell Turner already have put up a Facebook page mourning his death. Mr. Turner and his teammate, junior Thomas Woodson, were shot in the parking lot outside an AT&T store near the Comfort Inn and Suites hotel, where their team was staying on the way to a camp in Florida, Durham police said.
Mr. Turner was pronounced dead at Duke University Hospital a short time later, according to news reports from Durham. Mr. Woodson suffered a non-life-threatening injury to the leg.
Investigators learned that the shooting suspect was staying at the nearby SpringHill Marriot hotel, police said. Officers arrested him there around 2:10 a.m. today. The suspect had been eating at an Outback Steakhouse across the road a few minutes before the shooting and didn't know the victims, police told Durham news outlets. Investigators aren't sure what prompted the shooting.
Mr. Turner would have been a senior this coming school year. Gators coach Terry Smith listed him as a Division I prospect on his preseason questionnaire for the 2010 season. He played linebacker and was a part-time starter in 2009 on a team that went 12-1 and lost to Woodland Hills, 10-0, in the WPIAL Class AAAA championship game. Turner was a full-time starter last year as a junior.
Thomas Woodson, a to-be Junior is the team's starting QB, and started all 11 games in 2010 as a Sophomore.
