The Gators will face the Cinderella team of the 2009 playoffs - North Hills, who have upset both McKeesport (#5) and North Allegheny (#4) to advance to the Semis against the Gators. North Hills and Gateway have a long history of bitterly fought games, dating back to 1960. Most recently, the two teams played in the 2003 quarterfinals at Penn-Trafford. Gateway was the #1 seed that year and N.H. was #8, and North Hills stormed out to a 21-0 lead before the Gators clawed back to tie it up and send the game to overtime. In OT, the Gators scored first, a field goal, but NH scored a TD on their possession and won 30-27. It was also memorable for a few other reasons, namely North Hills players running right through the Gateway sidelines at the end of the first half - unpenalized, and then after the game N.H. running back Andrew Johnson went to midfield after taking off his shoulder pads and "flexed" for the crowd...
Game will be played at Fox Chapel High School this Friday, the 20th.
Fox Chapel is one of the "Smaller" stadiums in AAAA. Here are photos of the stadium:

Penn Hills returned a INT return for TD for their second score and held on to a 14-7 win over Upper St. Clair. This will be the third time since 2006 that the Gators and Penn Hills have played twice in a season.
In the bottom half of the bracket, a HUGE upset was turned in by North Hills knocking out McKeesport 19-7 - at McKeesport, thus NH advances to play NA, who beat Latrobe 47-0.
Gateway and Penn Hills will play at Norwin on Friday the 13th at 7:30pm.

Congratulations to the Gateway Gators - 2009 Foothills Conference Champions
The Gators visited McKeesport and came away with an impressive 21 point victory... led by a dominating performance by both the O and D lines, the Gators held the Flexbone in check, surrendering only a 20 yard pass TD midway through the 1st quarter and a 2 yard TD run with 4:20 left in the game.
McKeesport's offense was plugged up most of the night. McKeesport had only 85 rushing yards on 29 attempts. Darien Robinson, one of the leading rushers in the WPIAL, managed only 64 yards on 16 attempts. Quarterback Ty-Meer Brown had only 7 yards on five attempts and passed 6 of 9 for 87 yards.
Gateway's offense had 26 first downs to McKeesport's eight, and Gateway also had 230 yards rushing. Orne Bey rushed for 108 yards on 23 carries and Brendon Felder for 97 on 14. QB Kalkstein completed 16 of 26 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown.
Overall Gateway outgained McKeesport 423 to 172.

Next update coming Monday night after we have the AAAA brackets and know our 1st round opponent... The Gators will most likely be facing Plum in the first round on Friday, Nov. 6...
The Gators (8-0) will travel 10 miles south to take on the 7-1 McKeesport Tigers at McKeesport. Winner takes the Conference Title, and a higher seating for the WPIAL AAAA Playoffs... lots at stake!
Facts about the upcoming AAAA game of the year:
On a record-breaking night at Antimarino Stadium, the Gators set their all-time high points scored in one game - even though the starters started coming out of the game midway through the 2nd quarter. 11 - Eleven different Gators scored against Connellsville - not one single Gator scored twice. Another amazing fact was the FIRST tackle recorded by Connellsville - wasn't until 5:40 of the 2nd quarter. Prior to that, every time a Gator player touched the ball, it went for a score. Despite scoring 76 points, the Gators only had 321 yards of total offense - because the Gator D, both Varsity and JV kept the Falcons deep in their own end for most of the game, thus giving the Gators a short field to work with all night...
The Gators will now shift their focus to prepping for the McKeesport Tigers - whom they will face Friday, Oct. 30 @ McKeesport in the biggest game of the year in AAAA so far...

»Vote now for Gators QB Rob Kalkstein as the KDKA player of the week
In a game that will be long remembered for the drastic differences between the first and second halves, the Gators turned a 10-7 deficit into a 35-17 victory over a tough McDowell squad. This was truly the tale of two different halves. In the first half, McDowell dominated the clock - an amazing 19:40 out of 24:00 - and held the Gators to only 9 plays on offense. On one drive the Gators used only 22 seconds to move two plays and 61 yards for an Orne Bey TD run, but the rest of the 1st half was McDowell running their triple option 2-3-4 yards at a time and chewing up the clock. At halftime Coach Smith gave the Gators a boost in confidence and told the squad they took all the Trojans could give them and they were still in the ballgame trailing only by three.
The second half was a completely different story. Gateway dominated the second half both ways - defensively limiting the Trojans to 110 yards - 72 of which came on one pass. In the second half the Trojans had 86 yards passing and 24 yards rushing. Offensively in second half, the Gators piled up nearly 250 yards led by QB Kalkstein who played perhaps one of his finest games ever, and went 10-14 for 225 yards, 3 passing TD's and 1 rushing TD. Even McDowell coach Mark Soboleski was so impressed with Kalkstein's peformance that he tracked down the Gators QB post game to personally talk to him, in a show of the respect that these two teams are developing for each other.
Once the Gator defense figured out how to contain the powerful McDowell rushing attack, the Gators offense got it all started by driving 52 yards capped by a 1 yd TD run by Kalkstein to make the score 14-10. On the ensuing possesion, the Gators had the Trojans on a 3rd and 13, when their QB rolled out almost to the sidelines and under heavy pressure heaved a ball far downfield and over DB Nunley's outstreached hands right into the WR hands and he was off to the races to put McDowell back on top 17-14. That was McDowell's last lead of the night.
After receiving the ensuing kickoff, the Gators promptly covered 67 yards in 5 plays and 2:10 on the clock. Kalkstein found Vranka running wide open in the secondary and dropped the ball in his hands for a 30 yard TD pass to put the Gators right back on top 21-17.
The Gators then held McDowell deep in their own end, and took the McDowell punt at the Trojan 45. On the very first play Kalkstein hit Armsted Williams for a 45 yard TD and the Gators were on top 28-17 at 9:24 of the 4th.
On the next offensive series by McDowell, the Gators stripped the ball from the ball carrier and took over on the McDowell 23. On the second play in that series Kalkstein hit Nunley with a 23 yard TD pass and run for the final score to make it 35-17. All told the Gators rolled up 28 points in a little over 10 minutes of clock time.
Near the end of the game after the Gators forced McDowell to punt for the last time, the Gators moved the ball all the way down to the McDowell 10 - all starters still in both sides - with 1:30 on the clock the Gators started taking knees in the victory formation to run out the clock.

The Gators cruised out to a 38-0 lead in the first half before the Warriors got any offense going. The Warriors were able to score with 17 seconds left in the 1st half, but after receiving the kickoff, the Gators went 60+ yards in two passing plays and scored again before halftime to make the score 45-7 at the half. In the 2nd half, most of the 1st team played only the first series, and then Gateway started subbing in players. Oddly, the Warriors kept their starting offense in the ENTIRE game and were able to generate a second touchdown against the Gators with 1:11 on the clock to make the final 51-14.

The Gators played well as a team Friday night against Bethel Park, holding BP to around 100 yards offense for the night and keeping their offense off the scoreboard. However, as Coach Smith said post-game, the "Gators need to improve as a team and we can play better..." On the other side of the ball, Gator Brendan Felder had a big evening ripping off several big plays, including a 78 yard TD catch and a 75 yard TD run.
The Gators will now switch gears and prepare to play #1 ranked Penn Hills on Friday Sept. 4, 2009 at Penn Hills. Penn Hills is ranked #1 in the WPIAL, ranked in the state as well as nationally by several media outlets. Gateway and Penn Hills have played 44 times since 1959, with Gateway's record 17-26-1 against the Indians.

This is one of the largest and most successful classes in Gateway History. A study done by Vanderbilt University states of 11,549 High Schools across the United States of America which produced at least 1 division IA signing from 2004 to 2008, 1290 High Schools produced at least 3 Division IA football players during the five year period studied. This is less than 9% of all the High Schools in the country.
This class alone has 5 Division IA athletes signing. This brings Gateway's total of Division IA signings from 2003-2009 to 16. This class of 2009 has set a school record for Division IA signings with 5.
It has surpassed the previous high of 4 in 2008 and 2006. 2005 Gateway graduate Justin King plays for the St Louis Rams and 2004 Gateway graduate Mortty Ivy is looking to be drafted in the 2009 NFL draft.
